The Ford Flex has been upgraded substantially from last year, and because of this it has seperated itself from competitors like the Mazda5. Ford announced that the Flex has the highest percent of return buyers than any of their other models, and this is likely to do with the year to year improvements. The Flex is intended to commute people from place to place, and do so efficiently. With a 2-3-2 seating arrangement, the Flex can carry up to a group of seven at once. It is neither a SUV, or a Minivan, it is simply a utility vehicle, because it has many advantanges, and purposes. The largest revision from earlier models is the new V6 engine which offers more horsepower, and gaining an extra mile per gallon. More power, better MPG? Almost seems to good to be true.<23>Driving Impressions for the 2013 Ford Flex
There are two engines offered with the Flex, the V6 Twin-Turbo Ecoboost, and the stock Ti-VCT V6. The Ecoboost comes with an outstanding 365-horsepower, and while the Ti-VCT only pushes 287-horsepower it still is very sufficient. While driving the Flex the ride is smooth, and balanced. From inside the cabin drivers and passengers alike feel comfortable, and it's silent. The shifting of the 6-speed transmission is without a seam. A larger break cylinder offered better feeling breaks from the earlier model. Lastly, the new electonic power steering system for the new Flex provides a quicker steering ratio.
Yes the Flex is a box, but it is described as a stylish, and somewhat of an elegant box. Though boxy in stature, the Flex isn't as worried about appearance as it is about capacity. The purpose of the Flex is apparent in its shape, it intends to store, and carry passengers. The Flex stands five feet, eight inches tall, so it isn't as tall as a SUV, nor is it as short as a station wagon. It's a perfect middle ground. There isn't much flash with the Flex, except the new grille and tail trim. Lastly, the 2013 Flex offers six new wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17-20 inches.
The Ford Flex interior has received a makeover from last years model. The main display on the dashboard is bright, and engaging. The MyFordTouch has been repgorammed to work properly. It is also easier to use, and a lot less confusing or aggreavating as the original in the 2011 models. The gauges are a glooming white, easy to read and an absolute pleasure to look at. The glovebox is deep, the door pockets are deep, and there are cubbies here, there and almost everywhere. Plenty of arm rests, and what seems to be almost an over abundance of cup holders, count it ten cup holders. All passenger seats offer equal comfort, personal space and legroom.
The 2013 Ford Flex is offered in three models: Flex SE, Flex SEL, Flex Limited.
The Flex SE (FWD) comes with Ford's new 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine making 287 horsepower, and a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual gear selection. Seating is three rows, of two-three-two seats in cloth upholstery, with 6-way power driver's seat. Standard equipment includes power everything, halogen headlamps, body-colored door handles and black mirrors, rear tinted glass, 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, cabin air filter, 10 cupholders and bottle holders, 60/40 flat-folding second row seats, 50/50 flat-folding third row seats, leather shift knob, leather-wrapped steering wheel with cruise and audio controls and tilt/telescope adjustment, 6-speaker sound system with single CD and MP3 capability, 4.2-inch color LCD information screen, and SYNC voice-activated communications and entertainment system.
Flex SEL is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. SEL trim adds foglamps, stainless steel exterior trim, power heated mirrors, 18-inch painted aluminum wheels, dual zone climate control, 10-way power driver seat and 6-way power passenger seat, MyFordTouch electronic controls with 8-inch LCD touch-screen, media hub with USB ports, input jacks, and satellite radio.
Flex Limited FWD and Limited AWD get the 3.6-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 making 365 horsepower, and the 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. Limited also adds chrome door handles, satin aluminum grille and liftgate trim, HID headlamps, LED taillamps, 19-inch painted aluminum wheels, 110V power outlet, adjustable pedals with memory, ambient lighting, woodgrain instrument and door trim.
Think of the 2013 Ford Flex as a beautifuly wrapped gift, in the shape of a box. Since the gift is square in shape, it is reasonable to assume that the interior of the package is spacious. The same is said for the Flex. Yes it is square, but it meets its purpose, and that is to hold more passengers or more cargo. With all the major changes to the Flex, the vehicle has become more efficient, more responsive and most of all more stylish. The Flex is the perfect family vacation vehicle, or substitute for the cliche family van.
